Single Stroke Fonts

Single-stroke fonts

Overview

GregFonts are custom single-stroke fonts for vector design, laser cutting and pen plotting.

They started with the Drawbot. A plotter follows vector paths, so regular fonts only draw the outlines of letters; I needed letters made of single lines. I set out to design a monospace uppercase alphabet, enjoyed it too much to stop, and ended up with Sutton, a complete set of letters, numbers and punctuation. Nassau followed.

Using them in other projects revealed properties I hadn't planned for. The letterforms can be warped independently of the stroke, the weight can go from bold to thin, dotted or dashed with a single setting, and Illustrator brushes can be applied to the stroke for more complex effects.

GregFont

Single-stroke letters don't fit traditional font formats, so there was no easy way to set type with them. GregFont is the tool I built for that: paste in text, adjust the settings and export an SVG. Try GregFont.

Sutton

The first font. It was built for Drawbot plotting, then refined for CombScript and one of the Sketching in Hardware identities. A narrow, minimal monospace.

Nassau

While designing Sutton I kept wanting to add serifs, so Nassau is where they all went. It isn't monospace, which brought new challenges for my layout tools.

Kosciuszko

Kosciuszko is designed to be warped and smoothed, drawing on arts and crafts typography. It's still a work in progress.
