Overview

Poland Spring has been at mile 19 of the Boston Marathon for years. In 2014 I was lead developer on a roadside installation there, built to lift the crowd and raise money for One Fund Boston, which supported people affected by the 2013 marathon bombing.

Two 15-foot-wide video billboards faced each other across the street, each an audio-reactive meter that visualized the volume and intensity of the cheering. Every time the crowd filled the meter, Poland Spring donated to the One Fund, and by the end of the race the $10,000 goal had been met.

The billboard app was built from modules that could be switched on live: brand messaging, and live video feeds overlaid with encouragement for the runners. Organizers switched between three live feeds and triggered branding modules from control software on their phones.
