Overview
The Expression Wall was an interactive drawing wall Red Paper Heart built as a permanent installation at Deloitte University. A low-res LED wall sat behind slats of plexiglass, which turned the pixels into a soft, unusual screen. A touch frame over the surface let visitors draw with their hands, and a Kinect camera picked up their silhouettes as they walked up.
Every drawing was recorded and stored in a database, for content moderation and to play back later in a gallery mode.
My role
I was the main developer on the wall, from the prototype that proved the plexiglass display could work to the software that ran it.
- Prototyped the plexiglass-slat screen on a three-foot-square section of the LED wall before the full build
- Built the camera tracking that picked up visitors' silhouettes as they approached
- Built the drawing tools and the low-res particle system made for the wall's coarse pixels
